Moss on Roof

Do you have a problem with moss on your roof?

Moss on roof is a common problem and usually effects roof tiles that are more porous such as those made from granular concrete rather than slate. It is often worse on north facing roofs because these tend to stay wetter for longer. Pitch of the roof is also a contributory factor as lower gradient pitches may not dispel rain water as quicky as a steep pitch roof. This site has a look at the various ways of removing moss from roofs and ways of preventing moss recurring so quickly. If moss dislodges in heavy weather conditions then it can also play havoc with the guttering and downpipes causes blockages and overflows.

Killing Roof Moss

Manual Removal : If the moss is very severe then it may be wise to call in a professional who can gain access to the roof to remove moss manually using a short hard bristle brush. Moss has a very short root system and is easily dislodged from between the roof tiles whether it usually found to get a grip first. A pressure washer is not recommended unless access to the very top of the roof can be obtained safely so that the pressure jet can be directed in the direction of the tiles so as not to dislodge or cause damage to the tiles.

Herbicide Treatment : Once the severe moss clumps have been removed then the moss can usually be kept at bay using a herbicide readily available from your local diy store or hardware shop. Moss is quite a slow growing plant so treatment once a year will usually suffice. The problem is usually how to get good coverage on the roof. One novel solution is to use a high pump pressure water pistol which can be extremely powerful and they often have a large water reservoir to hold the herbicide solution. This can be a tad dangerous so ensure that they are are pets in range of what is essentially a chemical weapon. Use in windy conditions would not be recommended and face protection is a must. If your roof has skylights fitted than access from within the house can be a preferred option.

Fit a Copper Ridge : A proven scientific solution to prevent moss recurrence is often bandied about by the professionals and it does work. A copper ridge or wire fitted along the highest part of the roof will oxidise when exposed to the sun and rain depositing small amounts of copper sulphate which is a natural moss killer and will evenly run down the roof tiles eveytime it rains. There are a professional companies that can fit a Copper ridge to your roof if you are not a competent diyer

Allow water to repel faster : After sucessfully clearing moss from a roof it can be a good idea to seal the roof usually a good quality roof sealer. There are many brands that penetrate deep into porous tiles and allow water to run off the tiles more quickly and evaporate faster to inhibit moss growth.

Increase natural light to the roof : Moss thrives in dark damp conditions so if your roof is sheltered by overhanging branches and foliage then it can be prudent to call upon a tree surgeon to trim back surrounding trees so that more natural light falls on the roof during the daytime

Check your Roof Guarantee

One final word of warning is to check your roof guarantee if you have one. If you have recently had your roof replaced then you may be invalidating any warrantee by carrying out some of the methods suggested above. It is a good idea to check with the contractor and/or the manufacturer of the roof tiles themselves. They may be able to give you some useful ideas that are of particular help for your own roof type.
